Creative Process: Inspiring & Collaborative

Amii & Carey in "rehearsal"
Both Carey & Amii love to bring people, ideas and art together with real lives and communities. Not only do audience rave about the work, but also the performers who participate in creating it go through a transformative process where the stories that make up their lives become the material.
The work is based on the idea that limitations in life lead to possibilities. What limits you in your life? What possibilities emerge out of your limitations? What is changing your life? Conversations around these questions are the source for developing the artwork, which include elements of movement, story, text, song, sound, spatial design, and interface design (how the spectator experiences or engages the work). Basic principles shared by the directors about working with what is immediately at hand and bringing the collaborators into the process in a personal way are part of the process.
The performance structure is based on our shared interest in performer-spectator relationship dynamics. How do spectators experience the work and what role do they play? We work with variations in spatial and social relationships, as well as with meaning making, story telling and comic relief. We begin the process with two days of workshops to identify and engage the people who will participate in the project. These workshops are for artists as well as curious minds, and we play with stories and ideas in an interesting way. Once we have identified the performer-participants, we spend 7 days creating their pieces. This rehearsal time can be as much as every day for 2-4 hours, or as little as three 2-hour rehearsals spread over the 7 days. All performer-participants attend tech rehearsal(s), dress rehearsal and performance dates.
